About us

A community school with a heart for the whole child.

Nyakahama St. Mary's Nursery and Primary School serves families in Kihuura, Kyenjojo District, in western Uganda. Our motto, Knowledge is Power, is a promise that every child here can learn and go further.

A community school with a heart for the whole child.
Why the school began
Our beginning

Why the school began

The school was founded to help our community attain basic primary education. Before it opened, many children in the surrounding villages had to walk long distances to school, or did not go at all. St. Mary's brought a school close to home, open to every family.

Educating the whole child
Our approach

Educating the whole child

We teach the national curriculum from Baby Class to P7, and we care just as much about who our children become. A daily meal, play, faith, practical skills such as cooking, and teachers who notice when a child is struggling are all part of school life here.

Life in Kihuura
Our community

Life in Kihuura

Kihuura is a rural farming area. Most parents grow food on small plots and earn little cash, so fees, uniforms and books are hard to afford. Children, especially girls, can drop out when money runs short or when they are needed at home. Keeping them in school is at the centre of what we do.

Together for our children

Working with partners

Partners such as Flora and Fauna Safaris help us support children whose parents cannot provide for them, and girls at risk of leaving school early. Supporters can also help with fees, classrooms and learning materials.

Vision

Our vision

A community where every child completes a good primary education and grows into an honest, caring and hard-working citizen.

Mission

Our mission

To give every child in Kihuura and the villages around it an affordable, quality nursery and primary education that develops mind, body, character and faith, working hand in hand with parents and partners.

Values

Our values

Faith · Respect · Honesty · Hard work · Care for one another. These guide how we teach, how we lead and how we treat every child.

Every child in Kihuura deserves a full primary education.

Fees, uniforms and books are beyond the reach of many families here. Your support keeps a child in class and on the way to P7.
